AN INVITATION TO BELIEVE

We are the long story, we are the beautiful tale, we are the impossible construction, we are the daily challenge, we are nature itself, we are soluble and the opposite, we are the aridity and the warmth, the majesty and the nothingness. We are much more than the first salt hotel in the world: we are a clear metaphor for life and its beautiful paradoxes.

Chapter 1

CRAZY AND BRAVE

To achieve something great you need two things: a crazy idea and courage. Don Juan Quesada Valda was the man - a pioneer in the field of organized tourism in southern Bolivia - who decided in 1998, rather like asking for something simple, that he wanted a hotel... made of salt.

Thanks to this unusual dream and its thousand experiments, a place sui generis was born. The main leitmotiv of this place has been, until today, to recreate an alternate reality where everything connects with the beauty of things.

Juan is no longer there, but his legacy remains in the Yin Yang of his children, working every day to keep that utopia safe, where it belongs: in a palace.

Chapter 11

A HOTEL MADE OF SALT

Although Palacio de Sal was launched in the late nineties, it wasn't until 2004 that the decision was made to move the hotel, which was inside the salt flat, to its shore. This way, on 4500 m2, a place with the luxury, comfort and practicality required by the most demanding tourists could be built. In addition, the new location does not invade the wonderful natural formation that the salt flat represents, nor does it break into the daily lives of those who live and work there.

Today, we can see from the sky the imposing silhouette of the Andean cross formed by the hotel; it translates the gift of our culture for everyone who wants to visit us.

Chapter 111

OUR HOUSE, THE SALT FLAT

With an area of about 12,000 km² in the southwest of Bolivia, the Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt flat in the world. It is at an approximate altitude of 3,700 meters above sea level and is spread out like an infinite white plain. During the rainy season it becomes a mirror, where the ground reflects the sky in one of the most beautiful natural spectacles in the world: walking on the clouds.

This salt flat is the source of the more than one million blocks used to build the Palacio. It is also the origin of every gram of salt that keeps it alive today; inspiring the art that decorates its walls, the invaluable community who works with us and the joint enthusiasm that makes it possible.
