CRAZY AND BRAVE
It all began with a dream that seemed impossible: to build a hotel... made of salt.
Don Juan Quesada Valda, a man and pioneer of tourism in southern Bolivia, was the one who dared to imagine it when no one else believed it was possible. His vision was not only to build a place to rest, but to create a refuge where the landscape would become an experience and where the magic of the Bolivian highlands could be felt, breathed, and lived.
Juan is no longer with us, but his legacy lives on in the yin and yang of his children, who keep alive the utopia he began. Every day they work to protect it and make it grow, keeping the essence of that dream in its most sacred place: a palace.
Chapter 11
A HOTEL MADE OF SALT
Although Palacio de Sal was born in the late 1990s, its history evolved with the wisdom that time brings. Years later, we made a momentous decision: to move the hotel, which was located within the Salar de Uyuni, to its edge.
There, on more than 4,500 m2, a place was built with the luxury, comfort, and practicality required by the most demanding tourists. The new location allows us to admire and honor the salt flat, and it does not invade the wonderful natural formation it represents, nor does it disrupt the daily lives of those who live and work there.
Thus, Palacio de Sal was born, where comfort and respect for nature are balanced in perfect harmony. A hotel that, from the sky, stands out for its imposing silhouette in the shape of an Andean cross, representing the gift of our culture to all who visit us.
Chapter 111
OUR HOUSE, THE SALT FLAT
At more than 3,700 meters above sea level, the Salar de Uyuni stretches out like a white universe with a surface area of almost 12,000 km². This makes it the largest salt desert in the world.
During the rainy season, the ground turns into a mirror and the sky is duplicated. Walking on it is like walking among the clouds, in one of the most beautiful natural spectacles in the world.
More than a million blocks of salt were taken from the salt flat to build the Palace. Every pillar, every wall, and every grain of salt is part of the art that embellishes our walls, the effort of the community that works with us, and the shared dream that makes us possible.
